Sepia Saturday : Gladys and A Royal Enfield

My first sepia offering of 2010 is another photograph of my mother, Gladys. This picture must have been taken in the 1930s when my mother and father would regularly tour England on their motorcycle. Although the photograph shows my mother at the controls of the bike, she was exclusively a pillion rider : my father - who I assume took the photograph - was the one in charge of the controls. I have a feeling that the photograph was taken in the West Country - in Devon or Cornwall - and the scene in the background would seem to fit in with this. It is a happy picture, a picture infused with adventure and excitement. It is a nice picture to start 2010 with.

Here is a list of those people participating in Sepia Saturday this week. If you would like to be added to the list, just let me know and I will add a link to your blog.

What list? Where? I know you may not have noticed, but I have been doing a Sepia Saturday (and a Sunday by mistake!)

My old Dad had a motorbike just like that, but it was different colour, different size and a different make; but it did have a wheel at the front and one at the back just like the one in the picture. . .

  8. keith wasnt there a moment ago!

considering that large numbers of motorbikes live in pieces in sheds the similarity of two wheels makes a striking resemblance

  13. I really like the outfit. She is ready to go for wind, weather, and bugs. I bet you dad took her picture as a joke so people thought she actually could drive, which she probably could if your dad would let her. That is a gem of a photo.
I have a bunch that I just found that are in need of scanning of my mom. You inspire me. We are so cold today, -17 degrees F. this am. -27 C. I need to move.

  14. Your mother was a rebel!

I've got some sepia family photos that I'll try and find before next Saturday.

I have one in particular in mind of my great-uncle sitting on the floorboard of his car with a brace of pheasant next to him.

  15. You know... if I had a photo of my mother on a motorcycle, you can rest assured that thing would be framed and hanging in the most conspicuous spot in the house.

    That's really cool.
